Is My Tyre Safe to Drive?

Answer a few quick questions and get a clear tyre risk score, a repair or replace estimate, and the safest next step. No jargon, no typing.

Question 1

What is happening with your tyre?

Pick the option that best matches your situation right now.

Can you see any of these on the tyre?

Look at the outer wall and tread. Choose the closest match.

How is the tread depth?

The 20p test: push a 20p coin into the tread. If the outer band of the coin is hidden, you are above the 1.6mm legal limit.

How old is the tyre?

The age is stamped on the sidewall as a 4 digit code (for example 3618 means week 36 of 2018).

What are the road conditions right now?

Grip matters more in poor weather, so this changes the advice.

How far do you still need to drive?

A short crawl to safety is different from a long motorway run.

Where are you right now?

Understanding your tyre risk score

This free checker gives you a quick, plain English read on whether your tyre is safe to keep driving on. It is not a substitute for a physical inspection, but it helps you make a fast, sensible decision, especially in an emergency. Here is the reasoning behind each verdict.

Sidewall bulges and cuts always mean replacement

A bulge or blister on the sidewall means the internal structure of the tyre has been damaged, often after hitting a kerb or pothole. The tyre can fail suddenly at speed. Damage like this cannot be repaired and the tyre needs replacing before you drive on it.

Tread depth and the 20p test

The UK legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre. Below that, braking distances increase sharply in the wet and you risk a fine of up to 2,500 pounds plus 3 penalty points per tyre. The 20p test is a quick check: if the coin outer band is visible when pushed into the tread, it is time to get the tyre measured properly.

Tyre age matters even with good tread

Rubber hardens as it ages, so grip drops even on a tyre that looks fine. Most manufacturers advise replacing tyres at around 6 to 8 years regardless of tread depth. If your tyre is over 8 years old, it is worth having it inspected.

Punctures, repairable or not

A puncture in the central tread area, smaller than 6mm, can usually be repaired safely and legally, which is far cheaper than a replacement. Punctures in the sidewall or shoulder cannot be repaired. We always inspect on site before recommending a replacement, so you never pay for a tyre you did not need.

Frequently asked questions

Is it illegal to drive on a tyre below 1.6mm tread?

Yes. In the UK the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre. Driving below this can mean a fine of up to 2,500 pounds and 3 penalty points per tyre, and it is genuinely dangerous in the wet.

Can I drive on a tyre with a bulge in the sidewall?

No. A sidewall bulge means the tyre internal structure has failed and it can blow out without warning. It must be replaced before driving, as a bulge cannot be repaired.

Can a puncture be repaired, or does the tyre need replacing?

A puncture in the central tread area, under 6mm, can usually be repaired safely and legally. Damage in the sidewall or shoulder cannot be repaired and needs a replacement. We inspect on site first and only replace when it is truly necessary.

How old is too old for a tyre?

Most manufacturers advise replacing tyres at around 6 to 8 years regardless of tread, because the rubber hardens and grip drops. Tyres over 8 years old should be inspected and usually replaced.

My tyre is flat, should I keep driving to a garage?

No. Driving on a fully flat tyre destroys the wheel and can be dangerous. Pull over somewhere safe and call a mobile service. We come to you at your home, work or roadside across Glasgow and Central Scotland, with no call-out fee.

How fast can you reach me in an emergency?

Our emergency line runs 24/7 with a typical 30 minute response across our coverage area. For roadside emergencies, WhatsApp your location pin and a photo of the damage and we will dispatch a technician straight away.
